Sound & Spirit: Welcoming Children Into The World
Ellen Kushner’s award-winning National Public Radio program Sound and Spirit celebrates the contrasts and connections of diverse world cultures, exploring traditions and themes that define the human experience. None transcends the language barriers better than the push and pull of family, especially the birth of a child. This album, a collection of songs from one of Kushner’s most requested shows, highlights the rituals of childbirth and the joys and frustrations of baby’s first year. From Serbo

Question by Takkun.: After a child is given up for adoption, what happens to them?
Seeing as many people tell women to simply give up the child for adoption, what exactly happens to that child?
I know there are adoptions when you find a specific family and what-not, but what about if you just…give them up? Can you do that?
If you’re an adopted child, feel free to say how your life was.
And about how many children (under 18) are left un-adopted their whole life? I KNOW it has to happen that they end up without true parents or guardians.

There is often a waiting list of parents who would like to adopt a baby, so initially the baby would go into temporary foster care when it leaves the hospital, and the potential new parents would make arrangements to collect the baby and it would be placed with them.
Some places have a “Foster to Adopt” system, where potential adoptive parents are willing to foster children, either until a child becomes available, and when a baby is available, it will be placed with them – the Children’s Services in our area works this way.
Yes, there are some children who are not adopted, everybody wants a healthy baby, sometimes children who are older, of mixed parentage, or who have disabilities are more difficult to place, but I don’t think there are “orphanages” any more, the un-adopted children are placed in foster homes, where they sometimes spend their childhood until they leave at 18, never having been adopted.
